Addressing the nation today Rishi Sunak addressed universal credit today. Of the benefit he said: “It is possible for everyone to get payments on day one.”
He went on: “That system has been up in place from day one.
“We have injected about £7bn into the welfare system to strengthen not just universal credit but other benefits.”
Backing the government’s financial response for needy Britons during coronavirus he said: “I feel confident saying we have taken extraordinary and unprecedented steps to secure as big a safety net for as many people as is practically possible.”
How can you claim universal credit?
The government provides a step by step guide on its website.
First those who wish to claim must check if they are eligible.
The government said: “You may be able to get Universal Credit if:
- you’re on a low income or out of work
- you’re 18 or over (there are some exceptions if you’re 16 to 17)
- you’re under State Pension age (or your partner is)
- you and your partner have £16,000 or less…
